Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Cast: Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Toby Jones, Ciaran Hinds, David Dencik
Summary: A spy film/mystery movie that takes place during the Cold War centers on a retired intelligence officer is recalled to discover a mole within the agency.
100-Word Review: A subtle, intense, well-paced film is the closest thing I’ve seen to a perfectly-made movie in a long time. Every shot seems well thought-out and meaningful. Gary Oldman delivers a quiet, arresting performance that captures audience’s attention, and he should win the Academy Award (even though he won’t). The supporting cast is uniformly strong. The film is also remarkable in that it depicts a few brief scenes of violence against women, yet none of it feels exploitative or gratuitous; they’re important to the plot and tastefully done. The plot can be hard to follow, so use the bathroom before viewing.
Agree 100%! Loved this film and had the privilege of hearing a live interview with Oldman and Firth after the screening. Firth said the director wanted the whole film to “feel like cold tea.” Fantastic image. Director should win the Oscar too, but he won’t either.
The director definitely won’t win because he wasn’t even nominated! Gary Oldman was nominated and so was the screenplay, but not picture or director. It’s a shame. I liked it more than almost all of the Best Picture nominees I’ve seen.
Well, exactly… Really supurb film. I want to see it again.
I also agree, although Alec Guinness will always be my Smiley. There were some changes from the book, but I loved especially the one that led to the awesome last scene! Great movie, best out of the nominated, IMHO.
Plus, having Mr. Darcy, Mr.Knightley and Captain Wentworth together in the same movie as Mr.Ollivander and Sirius Black was wonderful, I only missed Alan Rickman:)
*I meant best THAN the nominated pictures:)
I noticed the presence of all the Austen men, too! It was delightful. Although for me, John Hurt is Caligula before he’s Mr. Ollivander. 🙂
Of COURSE he was Caligula, thank you! I’ve seen the “I,Claudius” series a few times (though not as many as HP) — my grandma is a huge Robert Graves fan — but I’m awful at face recognition and remembering names and he WAS a bit younger than.
